DSP Engineer - Digital Signal Processing
Emtech Recruitment
DSP Engineer – Digital Signal Processing
Location: Cork, Ireland | Full-time
The Opportunity
An innovative technology company is seeking a DSP Engineer to join its growing engineering team in Cork.
This is an exciting opportunity for a DSP specialist to translate advanced communications theory into practical engineering solutions, contributing to the development and optimisation of cutting-edge optical communication systems.
The role would be particularly suited to a recent PhD graduate or postdoctoral researcher looking to apply their research expertise in an industrial environment, although candidates with relevant industry experience are also encouraged to apply.
You will work across algorithm development, system modelling, simulation and hardware integration, collaborating with FPGA, firmware and optical engineering teams to bring complex signal-processing technologies from concept through to real-world implementation.
Key Responsibilities
Design, develop and simulate advanced digital signal processing (DSP) and forward error correction (FEC) algorithms using both floating-point and fixed-point models.
Optimise signal-processing algorithms to improve communications link performance, functionality and power efficiency.
Collaborate with FPGA engineers to develop fixed-point models and detailed specifications for implementation in RTL hardware.
Build end-to-end system models incorporating analogue RF and optical components, including lasers, modulators, photodetectors and amplifiers.
Evaluate and predict system performance under realistic operating conditions through comprehensive simulation.
Work closely with optical testing and firmware teams to develop automated algorithms for transceiver calibration, beam alignment and runtime optimisation.
Support the development of robust communication systems operating in dynamic and demanding space environments.
Validate simulation models against hardware measurements and laboratory test data, refining algorithms to improve system performance.
Document algorithm architectures, modelling assumptions, simulation results and fixed-point specifications to support implementation, verification and system integration.
What We're Looking For
A PhD in Electrical Engineering, Electronic Engineering, Telecommunications, Physics or a closely related discipline, ideally with a research focus on digital signal processing or digital communications.
Candidates nearing completion of their PhD or with relevant postdoctoral research experience are encouraged to apply. Applicants with suitable industrial experience will also be considered.
Extensive practical experience with MATLAB and Simulink for algorithm development, system modelling and simulation.
A strong theoretical understanding of digital communications, signal modulation, noise modelling and error-correction techniques.
Experience translating floating-point algorithms into optimised, bit-true fixed-point models suitable for FPGA or ASIC implementation.
Proficiency in C/C++ or Python for algorithm prototyping, scripting and data analysis.
Strong mathematical, analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to investigate complex technical challenges.
Excellent technical communication and documentation skills.
A collaborative approach and the ability to work across multidisciplinary engineering teams.
