Academic Assistant/Academic PA - GRETB
Unijobs DAC are currently recruiting for an Academic Assistant/Academic PA to engage within the Galway Roscommon Education Training Board based in their Training Centre on the Tuam Road, Galway. We are looking for someone to commence ASAP, and the contract will be 8 months in length initially. The hourly rate being offered is €25.00 and the successful Academic Assistant will be required to work the below hours specifically:
Monday: 9am - 4pm
Thursday: 9am - 3pm
Role Overview
An Academic Assistant/Academic PA is needed to assist a learner in an adult learning setting (Further Education and Training Centre, Tuam Road, Galway) in their education journey on a QQI Level 4 'Introduction to Care' course. Modules include Intro to Healthcare, Personal Effectiveness, Workplace Safety, Intro to IT, Child Care and Safety and Career Preparation.
The learner may need assistance with mobility around the centre, some educational/ physical tasks (i.e. photocopying, notetaking, carrying personal belongings) but the goal is allowing the learner to operate as independently as possible.

- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
- Sensitivity, confidentiality and respect for the privacy of the student at all times are paramount in this role.
Role and Responsibilities
- A learner's registration with the Learner Support Service is strictly confidential and is protected under Data Protection legislation. Confidential information about the learner may not be disclosed to anyone outside of the Learner Support Service, without the agreement of the learner, except in cases where there is justifiable concern regarding the personal safety of the learner or others.
- The primary responsibility of the Academic Assistant in this instance is to assist with educational support requirements that the learner cannot complete wholly independently.
- An Academic Assistant may be required to assist with mobility and orientation around the classroom and centre, to the break room or canteen etc.
- An Academic Assistant may be required to assist with educational tasks such as photocopying notes, setting up the learner on their laptop or device, instructional guidance repetition etc.
- An Academic Assistant may be required to assist with carrying personal belongings or materials for the learner.
- If providing notetaking support, the Academic Assistant must write in black ink.
- Academic Assistants should not 'do the work' but simply facilitate the learner's ability to participate. The Academic Assistant will not assist with, or complete, any of the work associated with that course of study.
- Assisting the learner when with friends or working as part of a group requires particular skill and sensitivity. It is important that the Academic Assistant does not speak on behalf of the student.
- Give constructive feedback to the learner to ensure that the most beneficial service is provided.
- Discuss any issues that arise with the learner in the first instance in plain English, and if it cannot be resolved, the Learner Support Advisor should be contacted.
- Arrive punctually at agreed times ready for work.
- An Academic Assistant is only responsible for educational assistance/ tasks that arise during course contact hours.
- Provide 24 hours' notice to the agency if unable to attend an assignment so that cover can be provided.
- An Academic Assistant should not contact the learner outside the contracted hours unless in exceptional circumstances.
- Be discreet, respect the privacy of the learner and liaise with the Learner Support Service regarding any concerns or issues in relation to the learner or support service.
- Applicants must be eligible to work in Ireland at the time of application.
