2026/86 - Locum Consultant in Perinatal Mental Health
6 week cover (July-August)
Founded in 1785, the Rotunda Hospital is the oldest continuously operating maternity hospital in the world, and the busiest in Europe, with approximately 10,000 deliveries each year. The Rotunda Hospital is one of six hub sites for Ireland's Specialist Perinatal Mental Health Services (SPMHS). On the Rotunda site there is a full multidisciplinary team with 1 WTE consultant, NCHDs, clinical nurse specialists, mental health midwifes, and OT, social worker and psychology. The Rotunda has been at the forefront of developing perinatal mental health services nationally. A successful candidate will work within the multidisciplinary team and provide care for women attending the Rotunda from preconception counselling, through the antenatal period and into the post-natal period. The majority of care delivered is on an outpatient basis but SPMHS also support women when they are in the hospital.
Purpose of the Posts
The purpose of the post is to temporarily provide adult psychiatry services in the Perinatal Mental Health Department.
Eligibility Criteria
Qualifications and/ or experience
- Full registration as a specialist in the Specialist Division of the Register of Medical Practitioners maintained by the Medical Council in Ireland in the specialty of Psychiatry.
- Demonstrate up to date knowledge of all aspects of general Psychiatry practice.
- Previous experience or qualifications in Perinatal Mental Health (desirable).
Entry to competition / recruitment process
No candidate will be appointed as a Medical Consultant unless (s)he is registered as a Specialist in the Specialist Division of the Register of Medical Practitioners maintained by the Medical Council of Ireland.
Successful candidates must be registered as a Specialist in the relevant Specialty on the Specialist Division of the Register of Medical Practitioners maintained by the Medical Council of Ireland within 180 days of the day of interview.
Should the successful candidate not be registered as a Specialist at that time, the post may be offered to the next suitable candidate. Should no suitable candidate exist, a further recruitment process may be initiated.
Health
A candidate for and any person holding the office must be fully competent and capable of undertaking the duties attached to the office and be in a state of health such as would indicate a reasonable prospect of ability to render regular and efficient service.
Character
Each candidate for and any person holding the office must be of good character.
Age
Age restrictions shall only apply to a candidate where he/she is not classified as a new entrant (within the meaning of the Public Service Superannuation Act, 2004). A candidate who is not classified as a new entrant must be under 65 years of age on the first day of the month in which the latest date for receiving completed application forms for the office occurs.
Section 62 Post
It is noted that these posts are considered to carry with them duties involving the teaching of clinical medicine and/or the conduct of medical research under the direction of Royal College of Surgeons of Ireland. Therefore, these posts are considered a Section 62 post under the Health Act 1953 as amended by the Health Act 2004.
